Endings

I like beginnings better than endings! It's so hard to believe that I've been at this photo blog a whole year. I began doing it mostly spontaneously and without much thought. When Laura brought up the idea it sounded like fun. I'm always forgetting my camera, forgetting to take pictures and I thought this would help me remember. I would love to have a photo chronicle of a year. I didn't think much about artistic shots or new ways of seeing. I just wanted a kind of visual record.

I think I have that. And I think I'm a better photographer today than I was at the beginning of 2007, thanks to what I've learned from all of you! That's not to say I'm good at it, but I'm better than I was. And I think I do "see" differently than I did at the beginning. I notice light and shadows more. I see more.

This has not been the life changing experience for me that it has for some of you. I've enjoyed it (and gotten tired of it, too). At one point I was so overwhelmed with stuff in my life that I just couldn't record it. I just wanted to shoot photos of darkness. So I took a 3 week break.

I am changing cameras in January. My dh bought a new one and I'm sending mine with my dd for her semester abroad. I am not good with learning "things," with electronic devices, but I do want to try to learn the new camera and see if it makes any difference in my photos. I'm not going to be trying to take a photo a day. I may post photos from time to time, though. I am going to work at writing a blog, though.

I loved it when I had time to comment on your photos. There have been so many awesome pictures this year! I have LOVED the glimpses into your lives. And if I do a retrospective of your photos, like Sandy and Ampersand are doing (thank you!), I would make it one full of self-portraits. You are all dear to me.

Goodbye 2007!

The last day of the year begins its countdown...

Saturday, December 29 - Picnic/Campout

We spent yesterday on our new land. We carted a gas grill and blankets and food and the "kids" (all 10 of them ages 24 - 14) took sleeping bags and tents. We traipsed around in the woods and climbed trees and sat and talked. Rain had been forecast for Saturday earlier in the week, but it waited and we had cool air and cloudy skies. (I was glad I wasn't camping out, but the younger group had fun!)

I also am beginning the task of living there, even on weekends. I combined our fun visit with an appointment with a father/son team who will be doing our septic system. Since Katrina, laws have changed and it's going to be quite the process to get the septic system planned/in place so we can have electricity.

Friday, December 28 - Sweet Note

This is new under the tree. (We don't open gifts until New Year's)

Thursday, December 26

Photos without a flash frustrate me. These are grainy, but the best I can do at this point either because of my camera or my own ability. We all went out to eat... lots of fun, and a night I want to preserve in the memory bank.

Pedicure

This photo was taken late last night, but I'm using it today. J gives a great pedicure!

Friday, December 21 - The Mighty Mississippi

Shot this from a moving car on a bridge over the river.

Wednesday and Thursday, December 19 & 20 - Baking Cookies

We made sugar cookies Wednesday at home. Onn Thursday we went to friends' house and made lots of different kinds of cookies. The power went out and the oven door got locked closed with cookies in it, but we managed to get quite a lot baked.

Mockingbird!

I took dd to get her visa application mailed and this bird posed very nicely for me!

Tuesday, December 18 - More Old Place

Beeches are among my favorite trees!

Monday, December 17 - Roots

We made a quick trip to visit Jerry's mom in Mississippi to see her and Jerry's sister and family, who were visiting. While there we made a trip to some land the family calls " The Old Place." Andrew Jackson marched through this land on his way to the Battle of New Orleans.

The road in.

Half 'n Half

Which is it? Half empty or half full?

Saturday, December 15 - Late Night Meal

I'm counting this one as a Saturday photo because it almost was. Got this at close to midnight after the meet when the team and families went out to eat.

Friday, December 14 - Baby Sister

One of J's teammates showed off her week old baby sister after the meet.

Thursday, December 13 - Gotcha!

13yodd took this of our 20yodd's boyfriend. (It was taken with my camera and I'm so busy lately that my own photos are not worth much at all.)

Tuesday, December 11 - Birthday Girl!

She's twenty now, a woman. Is she that baby who played peekaboo in the middle of the night from her crib? The toddler who nestled in my lap pretending it was a nest and she was a baby bird? The little girl who designed fairy houses made with leaves? The woman she would be was there in those years, if I'd only known what to see. She has always been herself and I'm so grateful to have been able to watch her grow, to love her, to cheer for her. She spreads joy and life around and I'm glad I'm her mom!

She told her 13yo sister she wanted the cake in that cookbook for her birthday and so J made it for her (with a little help from me). Ours didn't quite look like the one in the picture, as you can see! But it tasted great!

Monday, December 10 - Lake Lights

Reflected Lights

I noticed our Christmas tree lights reflected in this calligraphy.

Saturday, December 8 Discarded

I took all the page marker post-it notes out of the books I used for research and there they sit on my desk. I am definitely the daughter of a Depression baby.

I do have a life. I just forget to take my camera!

The tree is almost done!

Headlines

My dh wonders how I keep up with college football ratings. Around here it's hard not to!

Sunday, December 2

Saw this sky tonight and loved the contrast of shadow and light in the cloud.

Saturday, December 1 Gymnastics Team

This was the first meet of the season for these girls. I'm not sure how I set the camera (obviously wrong), but I kind of like the effect!

Friday, November 30 Christmas Tree

We cut our Christmas tree every year at the same Christmas tree farm and haul it home in our beat-up pick-up.
